Donor Organ #4

My Dad provided parts from a solid state Lowrey and Hammond, and Ron Ashcroft provided the AO-35 from a Hammond. Friday I retrieved a 1961 Conn model 541 "Minuet" in non-working order. This was listed in the free section of CL. Yes it is a tube job. The amplifier is actually a stereo power amp using two pairs of 7868. These amps go through two crossovers to drive two 15" speakers and a rotating assembly with a Jensen driver. I am thinking about removing this entire assembly complete. The photos show that each key is controlled by half of an 12AU7 and its own tunable transformer.

This Conn 541 Minuet is actually a very good organ that is can be repaired with the same or lesser skill set than it takes to build a guitar amp from it's amp chassis. So the deed is done, but in the future please consider keeping such a fine organ. I too am a guitar player who has built many amps, but since I've been playing organ for the past 15 years as well I really have come to respect and cherish certain models. There are plenty of parts for these available from folks on the Organ Forum and the new Yahoo Group Electronic Organ History. Lots of retired techs that are thrilled to help you troubleshoot through PM's and many will even send you factory service manuals for the asking. There will never be another quality analog electronic organ built again. Guitar amps on the other hand are abundant. By all means preserve the following- Hammond tone wheel organs, Wurlitzer electrostatic reed organs, and Conn tube divider organs ( like the 541 spinet). Give the organ a chance you just might find you love it! Here is what a good Conn tube organ sounds like- http://youtu.be/6K_bTjMp4sc
Now put on your headphones and listen to the first three songs. Sorry, the record was monaural not stereo, but the second song Ava Maria sounds great in the middle of your head:)

Any progress on this? I have a a Conn 541 and I'm always thinking about how I could re-purpose it into something cool.

Tim:

Do you have the schematics for this 541 Conn? I have the same organ and I want to use a HK505 as a preamp but not sure which plug to connect to.
